There's a catch...

Ohhhh, lovely new (to me) books! And the best part? I didn't pay for any of them. It's true, they are all mooches and swaps and the only brand new one was obtained with a gift card.

Let's see what we have...

The Brimstone Wedding by Barbara Vine - I really enjoyed Asta's Book and have been investigating Vine's backlist to see what I might enjoy. This looks enticing and I should have a few more Vine books on the way soon.

Lot's of great Virago finds...

Cecilia by Fanny Burney - This is huge! I'm thinking this was not the best format for this book to be published in....it's rather awkward.

The Way Things Are by Delafield - This is about the doubts a 34 year old woman has about her marriage - are they really 'happily married'?

Crewe Train by Rose Macaulay

Deerbrook by Harriet Martineau - The author was a friend of Charlotte Bronte. The plot sounds reminiscent of an Austen book.

An Omlette anda Glass of Wine by Elizabeth David - I'm looking forward getting to know the work of this classic food writer.

Nigella Express by Nigella Lawson - This book is beautifully published but I can already tell it won't be one of my favorites of hers. I think what I like most about Nigella is her writing and this book has a bit less of that - in the interest of being Express, of course.

I emailed a publisher about an author's visit to my city and he sent me a great link to a site that lists what authors will be in your area. Genius! And from signing up, it looks as thought this might be international. I haven't seen anything in particular I'd like to see, but I'm going to keep checking.

Now that's the way to get new books :)
You've got some great finds here. And, cool link for BookTour. I'll have to play with that and see if I can find any authors coming my way.

All of those books look wonderful. I am currently reading and enjoying Diary of A Provincial Lady and your Delafield title sounds great as well. I love Nigella's t.v. show and Nigella Express is definitely on my Christmas list this year! She does have a way with words.

Cannot WAIT for Nigella to arrive at the library (I'm first in the queue). Disappointed there won't be a lot of her fantastic ramblings in there though, sigh.

Bookgirl, I hope you find an interesting author in your area. I thought it was cool too!

Jennyellen, I also love Nigella's show - I first saw in 2001 when I had a newborn and it was on really early in the morning - now my little one watches it with me!

Lazy cow, this book is much more similar to Nigella Bites and Forever Summer. She still describes each recipe (but not as much as in, say, Feast) but the instructions are more to the point.

Looks like a happy pile! I've sworn off buying new books with real money until the end of the From the Stacks Challenge, but I've been bookmooching like crazy. :)

Love the EM Delafield - very different to Provincial Lady, but also very good. Quite sad, but witty too. Think it was based on her earlier play To See Ourselves.

What a great pile of books! I read just about anything that Barbara Vine puts out. I read the Brimstone Wedding when it came out and I recall liking it. I plan on reading Burney next year as well. And the Delafield, Macaulay and Martineau all look good! Enjoy!

Simon, thanks for your thoughts on the Delafield - it does sound as though it has a quite different tone compared to Provincial Lady.

Danielle, I also picked up an ARC of Vine's The Minotaur for 50 cents, and have two more on the way from swaps - House of Stairs and Dark Adapted Eye, I believe. I think I'm really going to enjoy reading more of her books - her writing is so absorbing.

Eva, well, I haven't sworn off buying new books but I'm trying...a little bit! I just ordered a bunch from bookcloseouts but the prices are so good there I hardly feel bad.

Oh the best part is always when you don't pay LOL!

I had high hopes for Nigella Lawson books but somehow I'm not finding her compelling, don't know why. I remember my friends were commenting while watching her show "Honestly, would you prepare THIS and invite friends for dinner?". LOL
I guess she's not close to our (traditional) cuisine.

Cheers from Serbia!

Free books are the best books aren't they?? Love your blog! I'll be back. :)

I haven't looked at the book of the series but Nigella's new 'Express' series on the BBC, was pretty good. Some really good ideas for quick food though I tend to be a slow cook personally. Love taking the time to prepare a really nice meal.

Hello Milan-zzz from Serbia, thanks for saying hello! I suppose Nigella is not similar to your traditional cuisine, is she? I do really enjoy her writing though, even if I never cooked her recipes (which I do) I'd still read her books for the prose. I think my favorite food writer at the moment is Nigel Slater, another English writer.

Andi, Hi, thanks for stopping by! (It's a bit like having a celebrity!) Thanks so much for your kind words and I agree - free books are the best!

Cath, you know, I like both, or at least my life requires both quick meals and slower ones...I love being able to spend hours in the kitchen but sometimes I just can't yet I still want to prepare something delicious and good for us. I hope Nigella Express is shown here - I generally want to make the recipes after I've seen her make them.

Oh, I want the Delafield, especially! And I'd like to read the David, too. I'll be interested in your thoughts on Macaulay. I tried to read her years ago because of the wonderful quote on the Mary Azarian print I have about reading in bed - you may see it here:

Aloi, welcome! Thanks for stopping by and for your kind invitation.

Nan, I love the quote on that print! So true, I absolutely love mornings when I can just reach for my book and pick up where I left off - it rarely happens these days, though.

Lisamm, Definitely check out bookmooch and paperbackswap - great ways to recycle books and get more in return!
