Farmers' Market - August 2

Ahhh. Veggies.

Here are the goods from today. I think I'm going to cook that flank steak tonight with corn and the snap peas (not sure why there are still snap peas, but these looked okay), and tomorrow I will make potato and squash gratin with green beans on the side. Have you seen yellow shallots? I'm used to the red ones but thought I'd try these. I did see some tomatoes today, peppers, and eggplant. The weather has been cool, cool, cool. I hope I can make my tomato sauce this year -this is my summer wish. Enjoy the day!

We would love some of that cool weather. I'm still jealous of your farmers' market, but I have found a great organic farmer close to me.

It all looks delicious. We just turned some peaches and apricots from our farmer's market into a large tart. I'm going to miss these fruits when the season is over!

bermudaonion, I hate to say it but it's practically too cool! We'll be back to winter before we know it.

CT, thanks! Oh those fruits sound amazing! I'm pretty sure those aren't grown around these parts!

Ti, good to know!

Staci, I have a fancier recipe for flank steak that I do sometimes, but the basic recipe that I ususally do is just: rub steak with plenty of salt and pepper and grill for 5min on each side. Slice after it sits for 3-5 minutes. That's it! Flank steak needs to pretty rare as does grass fed beef in general since there's not as much fat. I also let the steak sit on the counter before grilling to bring the temp down.

christina, you wouldn't be saying that in January. Trust me!

Bybee, totally!

I'm used to the yellow shallots, too. For flank steak, I make a marinade, let in sit at least 6 hrs. and grill it lightly like you. We were away this weekend...seems like i haven't been to the farmer's market in ages.

Yum! You got quite a bounty this week. We picked up THE BEST corn at our farmer's market this Sunday. The tomatoes are (finally) pretty darned good, too. Also got some potatoes and whole wheat bread. That flank steak looks great. I have a simple, yet delicious recipe I snagged from a friend a few years ago. It's here on my cooking blog, if you're interested.

JoAnn, your flank steak sounds good. My two methods come from Cook's Illustrated.

Les, I've had 5 small tomatoes ripen. Sigh. I just went out and watered - the cherry tomatoes are huge! I think when they finally ripen they will be too tough to bite through. Thanks for the recipe - it looks great!
