Merry Christmas to me!

As promised, here are the books 'my husband' got me for Christmas. (I chose and ordered all of them. Which makes me perfectly happy.)

Here are the Persephone Books. I'm sorry the photo is so terrible, there is no light here, we're expecting a storm. I ordered the short stories by Dorothy Whipple and the Vere Hodgson Diaries. I've had my eye on both of these for some time.

Here are the cookbooks. I'm having a wonderful time reading these! The Riverford Farm book is arranged by vegetable alphabetically, the Abel & Cole is arranged by season. Both are lovely, with lots of photos and inspiration. My only question is, what is swede? My guess is turnip.

Here are the rest from The Book Depository. Emily Barr is my guilty pleasure, another by Mary Stanley, I believe this is the only one I didn't have, and Shopped as recommended by Nutmeg. I figure whatever is going on in British supermarkets is probably going on here.

Finally, I placed an order with a used bookstore recently and ordered these for myself. A couple Viragos, and I chose the Barbara Ewing book since I enjoyed her book The Trespass a few years ago.

The reason I was ordering from a used bookstore was to buy this, A Ride on The Red Mare's Back by Ursula Le Guin. Have you heard of it?

My daughter read it at school and they did a unit about it. She loved it and wanted her own copy but it's out of print. This is the gift she was most excited about, which was pretty thrilling. The copy is very nice with dust jacket intact. It is inscribed 'To my little Susie, Love, Grandma' so I had to explain that. I'm not sure how much Susie liked it since it's in such good condition.

I have a few reviews of 2008 books yet to write, but with all these people in the house and getting interrupted every 83 seconds prevents me from doing them. Also, I'm still watching Lost and have finished up to episode 13 of the first season. What did Kate do? Will the Korean man ever discover his wife's secret? Who was Ethan? Yep, I'm obsessed.

Great books! You recent post about Mary Stanley inspired me to order one of her books (I'll be sharing a photo of my own new books soon). The Emily Barr looks interesting as do all the books in the bottom photo! I've never even heard of Barbara Ewing--did you post on her and I missed it?

That's an Ursula Le Guin I'm unfamiliar with. Hmm.

Great books! Great present.

Ah, the promise of season one of Lost. Enjoy it while you can. ;)

What a wonderful collection of books that you received! I've just found out about Persephone Books on another blog and have requested their catalog. How wonderful that your daughter was so thrilled about the Ursula Le Guin book.

Wow. I am so jealous!

Those look like some great books! And I loved the first season of Lost, but apparently the other seasons just get screwier and screwier.

Husbands do need a little help when it comes to selecting books, don't they??

bermudaonion, didn't I, I mean he!

Danielle, I wonder which one you ordered! Barbara Ewing -I read The Trespass before I blogged so I don't think I've ever posted about her. I think you would like The Trespass, and the subject matter of a few of her other books sound interesting too. Check her out!

Carrie K, I'd never heard of it either. What is the deal with the rest of Lost - everyone says the same thing!

Kay, I'm so glad you're writing again. I'll be by soon.

Ti, thanks!

Red lady-Bonnie, you're going to love the catalog - I was so overwhelmed when it first arrived. I love when my girl loves books!

J.Danger, well, you did get your own present! ;-)

Eva, Yep, that's what I'm hearing about Lost. I don't know if it'll help that I'm watching them so close together.

JoAnn, to his credit, in the past my husband has made great selections of books that I already owned! So now he sticks with new releases or has me choose them myself.

Great gifts!! I love that arrangement with your husband. Mine does something similar for each one of us in our family, and it's amazing how many of our gifts to ourselves are books!

Great husband! And great blog! I posted your blog as recipient of a Butterfly Award at my blog at http://rhapsodyinbooks.wordpress.com

A swede is very similar to a turnip, Tara, but bigger and more 'orange'. Turnip will do just as well if that's all you have.

The Ursula le Guin is quite new to me. Look forward to hearing about it. I'm currently reading one of hers too - The City of Illusions. It's superb, as are all her books that I've read.

Robin, how wonderful that your family loves books so much! It's really not that different that getting someone a gift-card, is it?

rhapsodyinbooks, Thank you! And thank you for the award, that's lovely of you.

Cath, ah, thank you for answering my swede question. The Le Guin is a children's book! It is about a little girl and her wooden toy red mare that comes to life to help her save her brother from some trolls. We really like it.

Tara, I've awarded you the Butterfly Award! Check out the details on my blog.

I can't wait to get the Persephone Books Catalog!

Good job Mr. BC. Can't wait to follow along in 09 - and that children's book looks delightful!

Wow, Tara, what a fantastic selection of books! The cookbooks both look fantastic! I'm curious about Emily Barr--I've never heard of her...

Also I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who hasn't finished writing reviews for books read in 2008!

Tara, please report back on the Persephone's and the Virago's. Not read those titles and they look good.

Tara said...

Red-lady Bonnie, thank you! I wonder what you'll want first from Persephone..

Bybee, oh they are!

Lisa, mine are too! I have the best taste in gifts for myself ;-)

Melanie, didn't 'he' do well?? The kids book is a great story, I'm glad I was introduced to it.

avisannschild, Emily Barr - British author, writes 'popular' fiction, usually about young women, her stories are easy to read but fun since there's usually a bit of a mystery and some sort of twist. Many are available in the US - I really liked Backpack, and Baggage as well.

Vintage Reading, will do!
