Make Yourselves at Home on My Shelves

Here are most of my new to me books! (Pictures can be enlarged by clicking on them.)

The Heretic's Daughter and American Wife are ARCs. I'm reading American Wife right now - have you heard the controversy surrounding this book? Karen reviewed Resistance some time ago which sounded wonderful and I've had it on my list ever since. The final three on this stack are some of my new Vegetarian arsenal - a couple were bought with birthday money, the other I found at Half Price Books.

How I love those green Virago covers. The book at the top is not a Virago Modern Classic, but was published by Virago. The title is Her People - The moving story of a working-class Birmingham childhood by Kathleen Dayus. I'd never heard of this and came across it on one of the swapping sites. Dayus was born in 1903, grew up in the slums and was widowed at the age of 28 with four young children. Has anyone read this or the sequels to it?

Most of these are from used bookstores. I won the Persephone book from Nan - thank you Nan! A local bookstore had loads of these Hesperus books for really inexpensive prices - 4-6 dollars each. Most of these other titles have been blog recommendations. I've read all of Sarah Waters novels except for this, Tipping the Velvet. I wasn't sure about the subject matter, but decided to take the plunge since I enjoy her work so much.

I didn't know Sittenfeld had a new book out. I was put off of the title of her second one, "The Man Of My Dreams".

My copy of Resistance should be here any minute now ... toe tapping impatiently ;-)

I bought Resistance too recently, not really knowing much about it but thinking it sounded good from the blurb on the back. Looking forward to getting to that. Enjoyed looking at your stacks!

Is the Louisa May Alcott a non-fiction?

I'm looking forward to reading The Heretic's Daughter and American Wife. Any giveaways planned for either of these???? ;)

Bybee, American Wife will be out in September. I have read both her previous novels, and did enjoy Prep more. I think she's a pretty talented writer, though her subject matter probably keeps her from becoming mainstream.

Nutmeg, that is taking forever, isn't it??

Cath, The Alcott is fiction. The description inside the cover calls it "A world apart from the type of domestic fiction (she) is generally known for, ...a dark and ingenious study of deception and betrayal.." Sounds good, no?

Bree, Great news! I asked the publisher and it looks like I will be doing a giveaway in September for The Heretic's Daughter! Yeah! I'll have to see about American Wife once I'm finished - it's pretty long, 550pgs.

I love photos of people's recent book hauls. I don't recognize most of these titles though. So many books out there!

Natasha, So do I (love looking at everyone's stacks). So many books, and just not enough time. Sigh.

Bybee, I'm glad to hear it's of interest to you! I'll be reviewing it soon - next week I'm thinking, it's quite long.

Pink Lady Bug, I'm looking forward to talking about them! = )

Oh fun - new books for the shelves! I've had my eye on Resistance for quite a while now. And, look at all those lovely Viragos. How many do you have now Tara?

Nice pics, very envious of your Viragos! I have that copy of Mary Lavelle as well, and really, really mean to read it...
Hope you enjoy your new Veg cookbooks as well!

Wow, beautiful piles! I'll look forward to hearing about the vegetarian cookbooks.

Iliana, I see you've been 'padding' your shelves as well! =) According to librarything, I have 116 Virago Modern Classics.

Melanie, I know, I mean to read them all as well! I don't really like to take them out of the house though, for fear of losing them, so that holds me back a bit.

Bookfool, thanks! Oh good, I'm going to enjoy sharing my adventures with my new cookbooks.

Lovely books--especially those Viragos! I've only read one of Sarah Waters' books, but I want to read them all, too!

Danielle, Sarah Waters is fantastic. I hope she does another Victorian book at some point.

Julochka, I know. I just seem to need more and more of them!
