Bookishness, Mostly

My book club had our last meeting of 2008 last Thursday evening. Everyone enjoyed A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but the downside of that, was that it did not generate much general discussion. How do you handle it when that happens? Then we voted on our books for 2009. Here is the list:

The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich
Time of My Life by Allison Winn Scotch
Emma by Jane Austen
The Gravedigger's Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
Tourmaline by Joanna Scott
Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum
The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I am really quite excited about our list! Most of my top picks were chosen, and I've only read three of these. In comparison, some years I've read up to seven of the chosen books. I was thrilled that everyone voted for The Book Thief, which was one of my three suggestions along with The Birth House by Ami McKay and another book by Louise Erdrich with a long title. There will have to be some purchasing, too, since I don't own most of these. I would like a new and pretty copy of Emma. Does anyone have any Austen books from the Vintage Classics line? Here is the cover of Emma. I'm wondering what the quality is.

In other news...

* I am reading three terrific books right now - that rarely happens. I can't wait to share them.

* Soon, we are going to be talking about a book reading goal that I had for 2008 that I think I'm going to reach.

* And one that I'm not going to reach.

* Has anyone seen the price of maple syrup? Real maple syrup? Holy cow, at Whole Foods today the 32 ounce jug of B grade was $16.99. EEEK! There was a note saying that warmer weather has simply not made it possible to produce as much and the shortage will last the next couple of years.

* Now, I am going to go make Creamy Tomato Soup and grilled cheese for dinner. Yum!

* Then, I am going to rest my feet, since I've been Christmas shopping all day. Cheers!

Your book club really plans ahead. I don't know how you read 3 books at a time.

I loved Time of Your Life and have Gargoyle on my list to read this winter break. I've never heard of some of these. Hope you enjoy.

Yum, classic grilled cheese! Such comfort food.

bermudaonion, yes we do. We have always done it this way. I don't know how I read three books at a time either! I only ever managed one before blogging. It helps if at least one is nonfiction.

Bree, did you post about Time of Your Life? I'm going to check. That seems like a somewhat lighter book.

Raych, this is one I'll be re-reading and I agree with you. Love this one.

Bybee, oh my. Readise - I like it.

Hi Leon, thanks.

That's a great list of books! I have 4 on my TBR and I loved The Gargoyle!

Worth every penny that 'real' maple syrup!

Your Book Club has some great titles on the list. I haven't read any but I've been meaning to read at least half of them.

Wow, $16.99? Yikes. My Mom loves the stuff.

Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese sandwiches? That sounds like a perfect dinner.

At my former book club we'd do a nomination night and then find out about the books we'd read the following year at our December meeting - always one of my favorites :)

And, it's funny but books that we all loved were sometimes the hardest to discuss.

Can't wait to hear about your three good books!

Those Who Save Us was one of my favorites this past year.

Oryx and Crake is fascinating.

Your book club chose a wonderful variety.

Melissa, glad to know you liked The Gargoyle!

Nan, I couldn't agree more.

Carrie K, the other two people who live here agree that it was a perfect dinner. I don't usually hear 'yeah!!' to the what's for dinner question...

Iliana, it is our favorite meeting of the year for sure, when we vote. We send out our three choices we're nominating after the October mtg.

Christina, I'm glad to hear it - about Those Who Save Us. I think we did choose a great variety! =)

We did A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for our book club also and found a lot to talk about. Sometimes you just never know how it's going to go.
I am almost out of maple syrup. I'm scared now to buy more, but there's just no substitute.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorite books from book club last year. It was actually the first time I ever read it. I'd seen the movie often and liked it, too. The Book Thief is wonderful -- very different and touching. I think you'll enjoy it. You can never go wrong with Atwood and Austen!

Chain Reader, there is no substitute for maple syrup is there, I like to look with it in different ways so am very sad to see the price increase.

Lisa, I also like the movie, though it's not as 'rich' as the book, I'd say. I loved The Book Thief - I read it last January - and I cannot wait to see what everyone else thinks.

I have always wanted to read three at a time! Oh, and maple syrup- yes. Ridiculous! I broke down over the weekend and bought- gasp- maple "flavored" syrup. Its a shame.

Looks like your club has some good reading ahead! My group read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn last year at this time. Everyone loved it, but I don't remember much about the discussion.

We are lucky to have local maple syrup. With the shortage, the prices are way up...by I could NEVER buy the imitation stuff.

J.Danger, it's a new skill I've aquired in the past couple of years! It is a shame, isnt' it.

JoAnn, I think so too! You are lucky to have local syrup - I'm jealous. The imitation is just not comparable, is it.

I lead a discussion for A Tree Grows In Brooklyn and I followed a discussion guide I found online. We found lots to talk about. I love that book!

I really like the Creamy Tomato Soup from that cookbook, but the garlicky mushroom grilled cheese sandwiches that go w/ it are incredible! :D

I have Northanger Abbey from the Vintage line, and I think it's good quality; trade paperback, pretty big font (margins are small-ish) and no text rubbing off. I want to get the other five in matching covers because they're so pretty! :)

Natasha, well, I wish I had your discussion guide, since the questions I found were sort of dull.

Eva, haven't had the sandwiches - yummy! Thanks for mentioning the Vintage Line, I'm going to go ahead and order Emma. The covers are so pretty - I agree!
